John and Kathy will adapt C. Anthony Sherman's sweeping novel - which tells the story of two young boys who grew up against a charged racial climate and the specter of the Vietnam War in mid-20th Century America.

HOUSTON - April 4, 2023 - PRLog -- Film producers John Wayne S III and Kathy Sapp will start work on a new film based on C. Anthony Sherman's book The Promise at Koonville.

Sherman's inspirational book follows two young boys, one black and one white, from different worlds - Robert and Buddy. As issues with race relations between black and white people threaten to boil over, the boys form an unlikely friendship solidified by a childhood promise to one another.

Buddy and Robert grow into adults, and their lives take different paths. Robert joined the Army and headed to Vietnam, and Buddy pursued a career in law. During the war, Robert sustains an injury, and his old friend goes on a quest to save him and fulfill the childhood promise they made to each other.

The author, C. Anthony Sherman, is a nationally recognized artist and sculptor. He served in the Army during the Vietnam Era, which inspired him to write The Promise at Koonville. Governor George W. Bush appointed him to the Texas Commission on the Arts, where he was the first African American artist to serve in that capacity. He is the author of several books, with The Promise at Koonville being the first produced for the screen.

Sherman has produced works of art for the NAACP, Galveston Opera House, Houston Minority Business Council, the Urban League, Texas Southern University, and the George Ranch - to name a few.

The screenplay for The Promise at Koonville is by Stanley Younger, whose writing credits include the 2020 film The Banker, starring Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson.

C. Anthony Sherman says, "It's a blessing to have my book turned into a film. I look forward to this long-time collaboration as I bring other works onto the market."

Kathy Sapp is an Executive Producer/Showrunner for OWN, 20th TV, and FOX Television. She started at CBS, where Dan Rather handpicked her to work with a prestigious group of producers. Kathy is a Peabody Award recipient for her work on CBS News' Smithsonian Minutes. She is also the recipient of the Texas Southern University "Distinguished Alumni of the Year" award.

John Wayne S. III served as the Director of International A&R for Grammy-nominated producer Steve Hurley. In that capacity, he facilitated music deals, distribution, and publishing for Steve's agents in the UK and Japan. John has served twice as a music label President, fostering the careers of several hip-hop and R&B artists. As an awarded writer, producer, and director, his films Red All Over and Ebony Hustle have had overwhelming success across streaming platforms.

John Wayne S III will produce under Londyn Town Pictures and Kathy Sapp through Time Out Productions.
