GED stands for General Educational Development. GED test is designed to measure proficiency in standard high school subjects. The test does not focus on remembering facts, historical dates and terms. It focuses on using knowledge to solve specific problems and situations. Candidates over 16 and not enrolling in high school are eligible to take the GED test. The GED certificate is equivalent to a high school diploma. Almost all colleges and universities in the U.S. accept the GED certificate. Many universities in other countries also accept GED certificates (Nepal, Bangladesh, New Zealand, UAE, Thailand and South Africa)

A GED test lasts approximately seven hours and consists of four primary high-school subjects: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science and Social Studies.

Reasoning through Language Arts assesses reading and writing abilities.

  • Questions: 46.
  • Minimum score required: 145 points.
  • Time: 150 minutes.
  • Exam: 3 parts divided into Reading, Language and Extended Response.

The Reading test takes place within 27 minutes. It tests reading and thinking skills. Candidates will answer questions based on single or paired passages. Seventy-five percent of the questions are based on informational passages (workplace and community-based documents, nonfiction associated with general interest science topics and social studies). Twenty-five percent of the remaining questions are related to literary texts.

The Language test takes place within 45 minutes and assesses the construct of correct sentence structures based on the given words and phrases. The structure needs to be correct, with an agreement (subject – verb and pronoun – antecedent), punctuation, capitalization, homonyms and possessives.

The Extended Response test takes place within 60 minutes and assesses reasoning ability. Candidates give extended answers based on reading one to two passages or a passage with pictures.

Mathematical Reasoning assesses the ability of solving math problems and applying math to contexts.

  • Questions: 46 (the first 5 are not allowed to use the calculator).
  • Minimum score required: 145 points.

  • Exam: 2 parts divided into Quantitative Reasoning (45%) and Algebraic Reasoning (55%).

Quantitative Reasoning includes problems with data – statistics, positive – negative integers, decimals – fractions, geometric measurements, ratios, proportions and percents.

Algebraic Reasoning is expressions, quadratic equations, inequalities, equations, polynomials, linear equations, patterns and functions. Candidates also have to evaluate, solve and graph in algebra.

Science measures the ability to understand, interpret and apply scientific information.

  • Questions: 34.
  • Minimum score required: 145 points.
  • Time: 90 minutes.
  • Exam: 3 parts divided into Life Science (40%), Earth and Space Science (20%), and Physical Science (40%).

Earth and Space Science includes Earth's structure, plate tectonics, weather – climate, the solar system, the universe, geological cycles – processes and renewable – nonrenewable natural resources.

Physical Science is matter's properties and states, chemical reactions, atoms – molecules, motion – forces, waves, electricity, energy – work and magnetism.

Social Studies assesses the ability to understand, interpret and apply information. The questions are based on the candidate reading passages and interpreting graphics (diagrams, charts, graphs, editorial cartoons, photographs and maps).
