Richmond, VA – The McShin Foundation was founded in 2014 and has since been renowned as Virginia’s leading non-profit, full-service Recovery Community Organization (RCO) on a mission of helping the communities in Richmond fight against Substance Use Disorders (SUDs). Composed of a team of passionate staff, the foundation aims to spread the word of recovery and reduce the stigma attached to SUDs, as well as educate individuals, families, communities, or governments regarding the impact of SUDs.
As the only RCO in Virginia accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Peer Recovery Support Services (CAPRSS), The McShin Foundation has partnered with leading physicians to provide individuals and families with the tools for recovery to create positive lifestyles and facilitate the journey to a healthier life. As an RCO offering opiate detox, alcohol detox, transitional recovery houses, halfway houses, substance abuse treatment resources, and aftercare programs, the foundation offers a recovery model that implements Peer-to-peer delivered recovery Support Services (PRSS).
This peer-oriented social model program was created on the belief that the first 30 days are critical to the recovery period. The staff makes great advancements in building an individual’s recovery foundation by implementing customized recovery plans and setting achievable goals. With peer-oriented guidance, an individual gets a better understanding of what it takes to recover daily, increasing their chances at full recovery from their SUDs.
The Mcshin Foundation has recovery programs that provide welcoming, comfortable, and safe spaces for individuals to build their foundation for recovery. All the recovery residences are certified by the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences (VARR) and the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR). Individuals who seek affordable housing at the foundation’s sober living houses can access the Richmond addiction treatment resources and its activities, as well as accountability and structure within the house. Once a person is a resident, they’re required to attend weekly community meetings and pursue their recovery pathway.
The foundation’s 28-day residential program provides the participants with individualized recovery coaching, safe halfway housing, relapse prevention, and full days of recovery education. The residential program is comparable in developing recovery skills to what one may receive at an inpatient treatment facility. The residential halfway houses can also offer links to individual therapy, addiction psychiatry, and medical detox. During each program, the participants can access outings and activities such as museum visits, sporting events, art groups, rock climbing, white water rafting, and recovery events.
Additionally, Mcshin Foundation has jail-based recovery programs aimed at providing hope and recovery to incarcerated individuals through continued peer-to-peer contact from successful recovering people. All the programs at the foundation are open to 18+ adults seeking recovery for the first time, re-entering society from jails/prisons/other institutions, seeking to live in a safe environment as they pursue recovery, seeking aftercare when they leave a treatment center or have a history of relapse.
