Valuable Information from Orlando Air Conditioning Experts: Three Ways to Tell if an Air Conditioning Unit or System is Efficient

The Florida-based heating, cooling, and air conditioning company is proud to present a short, handy guide to finding out if an AC is running well.

ORLANDO, FL / ACCESSWIRE / October 25, 2020 / In the same way that heating is necessary for optimal indoor conditions in the cooler months, so air conditioning is necessary for optimal indoor conditions in the warmer months. As such, an efficient and well-maintained air conditioning unit or system is for critical human comfort. But how can an ordinary person tell if their central AC unit or system is functioning efficiently? How can someone untrained in mechanical matters ascertain if such a complicated piece of machinery needs maintenance? As a part of its ongoing campaign to better inform the general public about all matters relating to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), Orlando Air Conditioning Experts presents three ways of easily ascertaining whether an air conditioning unit or system is efficient.

Use Your Senses

It may seem obvious, but the quickest and easiest method of testing the efficiency of an air conditioning unit or system is simply to use your senses to gauge its performance. For instance, if a building or a certain section of a building seems warmer than it ought to even though the AC is set to produce its usual temperature, it may mean there is a mechanical problem causing it to work inefficiently. The same can be true if an air conditioning unit or system is making loud or otherwise unusual noises-be they intermittent or constant-or if it seems to be running continuously or overworked.

Use a Thermometer

If some doubt still lingers after using your senses, an AC unit or system can easily be checked by using a common household thermometer to conduct an elementary test. If shut off, turn the air conditioning on and let it run for approximately 15 minutes, then simply place a thermometer on the supply register closest to the cooling equipment. By putting it on the closest register to the source of the coolant, the variable of distance traveled by the cooled air is removed. Leave the thermometer in place for a full five minutes, then note the temperature it indicates. After that, repeat this process with the return vent, or the vent that pulls room temperature air into the AC to be cooled. If the appliance is functioning efficiently, the air coming out of the supply register should be at least 15 degrees cooler than the air being sucked in by the return vent. If the two temperatures are closer together, there may be a leak somewhere in the apparatus or the HVAC filter might need to be replaced.

Check the SEER

Finally, another fast and simple way to check the efficiency of an air conditioning unit or system is to check its seasonal energy efficiency rating (SEER). The purpose of SEER is to assign each model of air conditioner a number that corresponds with its air conditioning and heat pump efficiency, calculated by its cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the amount of electrical energy it consumes during the same span of time. A higher SEER rating indicates greater efficiency. While the minimum standard SEER rating is 14 for air conditioners, most modern air conditioners are rated between 14 and 21. To give some context to these numbers, most older model air conditioners are rated around 9 or 10. It's important to keep in mind that other factors can impact the efficiency of an AC unit or system as well, such as the size of the building, its cooling, or the makeup of the building's ductwork.
