On Sunday, October 10, 2021, a team of Army drivers captured the title of 2021 Top Dog Champions by defeating Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps teams at the Rally4Vets trackcross competition at Summit Point Motorsports Park, West Virginia.
The Rally4Vets Top Dog Championship series is the first-ever inter-Service motorsports competition. Teams of 10+ drivers compete in a trackcross/time trial format for individual standings within their car class and then collectively for points toward winning the annual rotating Top Dog Championship Team Trophy. "Veteran suicide continues to be a significant challenge for America, with 20 veterans taking their lives every day and we expect this number to increase as the veteran community comes to grips with the end of our conflict in Afghanistan," said Robert Hess, Rally4Vets CEO and disabled Army veteran.
Hess created the Rally4Vets program to give the motorsports community a way to help disabled veterans dealing with PTSD that often leads to suicide. Rally4Vets supports the programs of the Disabled Veteran Empowerment Network (DVEN), a registered 501 c3 charity. The charity recipient for the 2021 Top Dog Championships is Veterans Moving Forward, which provides trained service dogs free of charge to veterans dealing with PTSD.
The Top Dog Championship series will expand in 2022 to include a competition at Willow Springs International Raceway near Los Angeles. The target date is for the Willow Spring event is May 23, 2022, the week before Memorial Day, in honor of America's fallen veterans. The national Top Dog Championship will be back at Summit Point in October 2022.
