Owner Jerry Garlick says of the 2021 harvest, “This year’s Tupelo honey is some of the best in years, in the upper 90% realm.”

He explains the challenges with recent Tupelo honey production. “Due to the water wars and the ruling by the federal government, we’re not getting enough water in the Apalachicola River for bees to thrive.”

Tupelo tree blossoms need bees for pollination, and in recent years, the bee population suffered because of low water levels. Years of low river flow result in lower quality and less supply of honey.

When there’s plenty of rain, and the river flows freely, both oysters and bees thrive. The 2021 weather conditions were near perfect, and the river’s water level was high.

Early on there was some concern due to high winds, but flowering went well, and the timing for the bees was good.

Because the bees flourished, they created excellent quality honey, with delicate floral character and some buttery notes. The amber color has the ‘greenish’ tinge indicative of high-quality Tupelo honey.

Supply is slightly lower than last year, so wholesale prices are higher. But, Garlick maintained his retail pricing due to long-standing relationships with his suppliers.

Consumers can buy Tupelo honey in the store located at 14 Avenue D St, Apalachicola, FL 32320. They can also order by phone or online. Orders over $35 qualify for free shipping. Call 850-653-3550 or visit the website.

Also available is the 2021 Holly honey that Garlick says is “the best Holly honey I’ve seen. It’s clear where it’s normally an amber color and is so pure and delicious.” Other products include quality natural sponges and luxurious goat’s milk soap.

Visitors can stop in the store when they are in and around Apalachicola or St. George Island.
