“People often put off organizing their personal information because it seems overwhelming and they don’t know where to start. Or they can’t seem to find time to figure it out with their busy schedule. So, they fall back into the, ‘I’ll do it tomorrow’ mode, but that tomorrow turns into years,” said Ila Scott-Ford, the founder of Let Family Know. “I know. It was the same for me. If something would’ve happened to me, nobody would’ve been able to find anything. Like many baby boomers, when I hit 60, I finally got serious about getting organized, but the planners I saw just covered the same basics. And nothing seemed flexible enough to change as life changes. So, being a writer, researcher and problem solver for more than 35 years, I decided to create my own.” Scott-Ford said that when she began talking with friends about it, she realized there was a real need she knew she could fill. And Let Family Know was born. “I did a ton of research to build my ‘better mousetrap.’ I’m pretty excited about the Let Family Know Keeper products and the response we’ve been getting. There’s nothing else like it.”

The launch provides an organizational product that has most everything thought out and allows people to organize their personal information in a simple, affordable, and flexible way. It can be useful in their daily life, but more importantly, It holds important information about the individual’s personal affairs all in one place, helping ensure that loved ones are able to access the information if their family member passes away or becomes debilitated and unable to communicate.

Pulling insight from research, the Keeper was sized to be similar to a day-planner. It features a versatile ring binder and fill-in-the-blank pages that can be easily updated over time, as the individual’s life changes or they change their mind about something. A downloadable version with fillable PDFs is also available for people who prefer a digital format. Five sections are included: My important information, My digital life, What I want you to have (personal wishes for who should inherit items), What I want you to know (family stories and traditions to pass down), and Family, friends and others (an enhanced address book).

With the products being launched, individuals will be able to keep a record of all their vital information in the ‘My important information’ section (from family to finance and location of last will and testament and other critical documents, to pet care and funeral plans). The digital life section allows them to record information pertaining to their online accounts, including login details. A pocket-sized Let Family Know® Companion Keeper adds a layer of protection for passwords to websites where people access sensitive information like financial or medical. “This is proprietary to Let Family Know,” said Scott-Ford. “It seems many planners allow people to make the terrible mistake of storing both usernames and passwords to financial accounts in the same place. If some unscrupulous person would gain access to their password saver, they would basically have the combination to that person’s financial vault.”

In the ‘What I want you to have section,’ individuals can list the more personal items that may or may not not be included in their last will and testament. “This section seemed a must,” said Scott-Ford. “You hear of so many families that are torn apart when it comes to dividing up things after the last parent dies. With about 50% of American adults not having a simple will, and many not writing down who they want their items to pass down to, it often leaves it up to siblings to make those decisions. Especially under stressful conditions following a death, if there’s no last will and testament, hard feelings and damaged family relationships can follow. This section lets a person record what items the person is leaving behind and to whom. The company emphasizes that while this section is NOT legally binding, and is not a substitute for a will, it can help prevent family arguments following a death. It’s often things with less monetary value and more emotional value that cause real rifts when more than one person in the family has sentimental attachment to the same item. So, this Keeper section gives the person the opportunity to explain what items they are leaving to specific family members and WHY – which can help preserve family peace.

The Let Family Know Keeper also features a “What I want you to know” section where individuals can record family stories, fond memories, family traditions and values, achievements – even recipes. It helps keeps the family’s story from getting lost to future generations. Finally, there’s the ‘Family, friends and others’ section. It’s like an enhanced address book for recording important contact details of friends and family. Each entery has a place to indicate if that person should be notified if anything should happen, and whether there is a letter left for them or not.

To help people create some of the more challenging information, the Let Family Know Keeper comes with a series of easy-to-read ebooks and worksheets on the more perplexing topics, such as planning inheritance, writing family stories, and how to write legacy letters to leave behind.

Let Family Know is a life admin company that helps people collate their personal information so they don’t leave their family in a mess if they were to die.
