Intermountain Riverton Hospital Launches Innovative Tool to Help Allergists and Patients

In collaboration with the National Allergy Bureau, Intermountain Riverton Hospital is now certified to be a pollen counting station.

Intermountain Riverton Hospital now has an innovative new tool to help patients and allergists work together to help improve the way allergies are triggered and treated in the community.

In collaboration with the National Allergy Bureau, Intermountain Riverton Hospital is now certified to be a pollen counting station – and will be able to report accurate pollen counts and which specific pollens are high for the day.

Intermountain Riverton Hospital has placed a Burkard Pollen and Spore collector device on the roof of the hospital where it will run 24/7 to collect mold scores and pollen counts that come into the collector, process information, and look under a microscope to observe, read, and interpret which pollen is high that day. The interpretation and reporting out will be done by an NAB certified allergist.

Through this data collection and reporting, allergy patients in the Southwest corner of the Salt Lake Valley will have a better idea of how to align that information to their care and treatment plans with their allergists.

“Patients are noticing every year that they have similar symptoms around the same range of time. It’s important to meet with an allergist, to get good testing done and get a treatment for their symptoms,” said Scott Taylor, MD, an Intermountain Health allergist at the Intermountain Riverton Southridge Allergy Clinic. “We can now correlate with the data collected from the pollen counter and have a specific treatment plan in place. This will also benefit patients with asthma symptoms and for immunology patients.”
