HOKKAIDO, JAPAN (MERXWIRE) – Hokkaido experienced record-breaking snowfall on January 25, with Sapporo receiving 54 centimeters of snow in a single day, the highest January accumulation on record. Transportation across the region was severely disrupted, with snowdrifts in some areas exceeding the height of two-story buildings. Buses were suspended, cars were unable to drive, and JR trains were delayed, forcing residents and travelers to walk through snow-covered streets.

At New Chitose Airport, all rapid airport trains and shuttle buses connecting Sapporo to other regions were suspended. Travelers hoping to use JR trains faced long queues inside the airport, with approximately 7,000 people stranded overnight. Logistics disruptions also led to temporary shortages of some goods.

The Sapporo city government has prioritized snow removal, road clearance, and public safety, but traffic recovery is expected to take time. Roads in the city remain narrow and uneven, vehicles move slowly, and some cars have become stuck in the snow. A visitor from Taiwan said, “I came to Hokkaido for the Tomamu snow village, but arriving at the airport already felt like entering a winter wonderland.”
