With inflation breaking the back of hardworking Americans, many people are looking for role models and mentors to help guide them on how to set up new income streams. One entrepreneur doing just that after building his own business from scratch in a short period is Alex Mewshaw. Based out of Annapolis, Maryland, he started a successful design and landscaping company in 2019, now doing more than $5M in revenue.
After realizing he did not need a business degree to start his company, he decided to drop out of West Virginia University and return to Maryland. He started working for a landscaping company to gain experience and joined online groups to learn more about the business model.
He said on occasion, “I could not fathom paying for four years of schooling and having to wait four years to start a business. I realized that all a person needs is the right coaching and mentors. My first mentor Nick who ran his own business took me under his wing and taught me the fundamentals of landscaping. Moreover, I started to self-study and looked at YouTube videos on landscaping. Moreover, I started investing in professional training and attending business events by trainers like Grant Cardone.”
Alex paid top dollar for the best tickets to sit next to the veterans and learn what it takes to be a business owner. This helped Alex to launch his company OASIS and start handling small landscape and hardscape projects for neighbors, friends, and family.
Talking about his journey, he said, “The first job we did was a small river rock swale to help with drainage. The goal was to hit $250k by the end of year one, but thanks to the team's hard work, we knocked it out of the park and ended up doing $500k in revenue. We then started to do larger jobs and sold some backyard patios. By the end of the 2nd year, I had 15 employees and added pools to our service portfolio.”
Oasis completed almost $4m in 2022 and is projecting over $5m in 2023. His main goal now is to get people from $0 to their first million so they, too, can turn their lives around. Alex provides coaching calls and is creating online courses that discuss the problems he faced in scaling OASIS so entrepreneurs can learn from their mistakes.
He added, “If a kid with a lawnmower can own and operate a $5 million landscape construction company, then I believe anyone can do this. I want to help ordinary Americans living paycheck to paycheck to turn their lives around and achieve their dreams.”
