Silixa Introduces Intelligent Distributed Strain Sensor (iDSS™) to Product Line

The company hopes that its iDSS will be a step-change in the long-term monitoring of industrial production processes, such as mining works, by ensuring distributed static strain measurements with the best resolution.

Built on Silixa’s years of sensor expertise, iDSS is a high-end strain-sensing device helping operators calculate the absolute static strain distribution along an optical fibre cable (single-mode or multimode) down to the micro-strain resolution level.

The company claims that leveraging its highly accurate fibre-optic interferometric architecture, Silixa’s strain-sensing system helps operators gather low-noise strain data with sub-second averaging times.

On top of this, operators can use the iDSS data separately or integrate it with the data harnessed by other sensing distributed systems by Silixa, such as iDAS, XT-DTS, ULTIMA DTS, or Carina Sensing System.

The simultaneous use of iDSS with other Silixa systems offers incredible benefits in long-term monitoring applications, the company adds.

For example, combining the outputs of iDSS with high-end DTS or iDAS sensors ensures data fusion and an optimum temperature correction, leading to high-precision strain measurements.

“Without correction, a DSS system will see a change in temperature of 1°C as a change in strain of 20με. Adding a best-in-class DTS allows the corrected strain resolution to reach 2με.,” explains a spokesperson from Silixa. “This step-change in performance is most acute in long term monitoring applications where temperature variations along the length of the fibre can vary with time, and/or where the exact point of strain build upon an asset is not known ahead of time, when selecting the best placement of sensing technology.”

Silixa claims its high-performance iDSSdevice with a corrected resolution of 2με can efficiently operate in various applications, such as slopes, subsidence, and infrastructures.

On top of this, this intelligent distributed sensor shows unparalleled performance in terms of variable spatial resolution—operators can achieve class-leading spatial resolution down to 20 cm over a sensing range of up to 35 km.
