Matrix Origin Released MatrixOne Version 0.2, A Cloud & Edge Native DBMS with Innovative Multi-engine Fusion

By: Get News

In March 2022, the innovative enterprise Matrix Origin, which specializes in data intelligence, released version 0.2 of its planned cloud & edge native DBMS with multi-engine fusion, MatrixOne. Preliminary test reports saw excellent performance results.

As the next big thing, the Database Management System (DBMS) industry has been flooded with new entrants in recent years. In June 2021, Matrix Origin, with only a five-month history at the time, announced the attainment of ten million dollars in angel investing. Only 4 months later, it had secured more than tens of millions in 2nd angel investing. How did Matrix Origin eclipse its competitors and win the favor of so many investors? The Founder, Long Wang, recently revealed the truth in an interview.

Rush into DBMS, a promising racetrack

Long Wang previously worked in Silicon Valley and Munich, which was complemented by additional entrepreneurial experience in Beijing and Shanghai. He once served as vice president of Tencent Cloud, built the big data and artificial intelligence product (to business) series and commercialization system from scratch, and grew product line income from millions to billions in just three years.

Even then, Long Wang realized that a new generation was coming. The maturity of the public cloud, with the continuous popularization of AIoT and 5G technologies, had provided a good foundation for the next generation of software applications. Furthermore, China had positioned “intelligent manufacturing” as a main direction for manufacturing transformation and promoted investments and support from various forces towards fundamental software technology. In a word, the prospect of China’s database industry was very broad.

Based on all these facts and information, Long Wang believed that the explosive stage of the DBMS fundamental software industry was soon arriving. Therefore, he chose to leave the giant of the internet industry and rush onto a new path.

In his talk, Matrix Origin’s core team consisted of only three or four people at inception. As more and more domain experts recognized them, it expanded to nearly 40 people in just one year. He said: “Matrix Origin upholds the principles of being simple, frank, direct, equal in all communications and cooperative efforts. Matters are discussed openly and with transparency when making final decisions. The support of the team’s buddies is awesome and indispensable for what we have accomplished in just a few months.”

Bring simplicity and flexibility to users

Nowadays, the application of data management is becoming more and more complex and fragmented. It is difficult to find a low-cost and high-performance way to connect data silos. To solve these problems, Matrix Origin launched MatrixOne, a cloud & edge native DBMS with multi-engine fusion, which aims to reduce the threshold for users to choose data intelligent systems.

According to Long Wang, MatrixOne mainly serves three groups. The first is app and data developers: MatrixOne will help them process and use all kinds of data in a simple, fast, and unified way. The second group is the operators and maintenance staff of data infrastructure, MatrixOne will support multiple infrastructures through the same technical framework, to reduce the learning cost and difficulty in operation and maintenance. The third group is open-source enthusiasts: MatrixOne has built an open-source community through a set of simple and loosely coupled architecture designs, with a large number of demonstrations and documents, in order to drive extreme innovation.

“In MatrixOne version 0.2, we can meet the needs of high-performance data analysis while data is updated in real time without sacrificing consistency. Of course, when more capabilities are added, the complexity of the work will increase exponentially, but we are confident in our ability to deliver. We leave complexity with ourselves to bring simplicity and flexibility to users.” Long Wang said.

Opensource is a must-go pathway

In Long Wang’s view, MatrixOne, as next generation data infrastructure, is destined to be an open-source product. “A successful infrastructure software product highly relies on a large and rich ecology. The more people use it and contribute code for it, the better, healthier, the ecology will be.” He added, “In addition, prospective customers can choose from many commercialized companies in the open-source environment. The competition will motivate these companies to constantly innovate and provide professional, effective, and valuable services. MatrixOne has chosen the path of open-source, and we always have a strong driving force to improve our services.”

Although making infrastructure software products requires significant patience and long-term accumulation, Long Wang is very optimistic about MatrixOne’s market expectations.

On one hand, according to IDC, the global database market scale is expected to exceed US $40 billion in 2022. Long Wang believes that there is still significant growth potential in the data management market, and covering the whole market demand is not something that one or two companies can fulfill. There is big enough room for startups and entrepreneurs.

On the other hand, MatrixOrigin keeps building its own strength and advantages: “We researched the past development law and recent advancements in this industry, and made a large number of customer and partner interviews in last a few months. Those efforts have fed into MatrixOne’s architecture design and technical implementation which are highly specialized and targeted. Many enthusiasts have joined the MatrixOne’s open-source community to participate in discussions and contribute code, which gives us more than enough confidence in the future of MatrixOne.”
