Seatuary Reveals Travel Trends for 2021

By: Issuewire

Chicago, Nov 27, 2020 (Issuewire.com) - Attempting to put a tumultuous year behind, travelers will head into the new year with a mix of lingering fear and renewed hope. The Seatuary "Travel Trends and Gear Guide 2021" reveals 3 trends and 17 products shaping the year ahead in travel.

1. Personal Space Redefined

The classic "close talker" episode of Seinfeld perfectly captures the cringe-worthy discomfort of personal space violations. COVID-19 is obviously re-defining some of the unwritten personal space rules. But there is more to the story - the sharing economy, co-location spaces, tighter spaces, social media, and more continue to influence how we think about physical and digital personal space.

A 2020 survey of 1,000 travelers found travel annoyances remain persistent. With ever-shrinking airplane seats, it is no surprise respondents cite intrusion into their seat or personal space as the top annoyance among the set of travel stresses evaluated. For women the issue is even more prevalent, with 47% rating it a top disturbance compared to 39% of men. Relatedly, 28% of respondents cite armrest hogs and the bumping of elbows as an annoyance that contributes to travel misery. In the context of COVID-19, what may have been characterized as a mild annoyance, now becomes a more pressing issue.

2. Making the Most of It Redefined

Shorter getaways (micro-cations) and the notion of "authentic spontaneity" are trends that have been gaining momentum for some time now. We will likely see the pendulum swing even further in this direction in the year ahead. A further embracing of the "it's about the journey, not the destination" mindset is a fitting approach to travel in these uncertain times.

3. Simplicity Redefined

One of the interesting side effects of the pandemic has been a sort of forced-simplicity in many facets of our lives. With mandatory or self-imposed restrictions, there has been renewed interest in cooking, gardening, board games, all things maker culture, and more. Thinking about the travel space, a few simplicity redefined products typify this trend.
