Mixed Close Ahead Of Fed Policy Decisions

The markets closed mixed with the Dow rising 7 points to 11,408 as investors awaited the announcement of policy decisions tomorrow by the Federal Reserve. Nasdaq fell 22 points to 2590.

On the upside

Transcept Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: TSPT) will present at the JMP Securities Healthcare Conference on September 28, 2011.

A Seeking Alpha contributor listed The Interpublic Group of Companies (NYSE: IPG) as one of seven S&P 500 companies under $10 with significant upside potential.

Newmont Mining (NYSE: NEM) chief executive Richard O’Brien said yesterday that gold prices will continue to climb over the next five to seven years.

On the downside

Shares of Suntech Power (NYSE: STP), Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL) and Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE) all fell over growing concerns that the challenging global economic environment will further dampen demand for solar power. 

Newcastle Investment (NYSE: NCT) will offer 22.5 million common shares through a public offering.

A Seeking Alpha contributor recommended selling Renren (NYSE: RENN) saying that the company was not profitable.

In the broad market, declining issues outpaced advancers by a margin of more than 3 to 2 on the NYSE and by 5 to 2 on Nasdaq. The Russell 2000 which tracks small cap stocks tumbled 12 points to 689.
