MassNAELA Honors Elder Law Month by Offering Educational Resources and Seminars to Attorneys and Citizens Concerned with Elder and Special Needs Law

The Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (MassNAELA) celebrates May as Elder Law Month by promoting its mission to educate, inspire, serve, and advocate for the elderly and those with special needs, and provide community to attorneys practicing in elder and special needs law.

As part of its advocacy efforts, MassNAELA offers the latest edition of the Elder Resource Guide, created in collaboration with the Massachusetts Bar Association. Found at https://massnaela.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/2025-Elder-Resource-Guide.pdf, the Elder Resource Guide provides valuable information on estate planning; probate and estate considerations; healthcare decisions and end-of-life choices; retirement planning; pensions; social security; Medicare; MassHealth and community Medicaid benefits; Veterans’ benefits; long term care rights; special needs trusts and Able Act; reverse mortgages; homesteads and life estates; federally funded and subsidized housing; and elder abuse, neglect, financial exploitation and scams.

MassNAELA members across the Commonwealth are conducting public presentations on the issues covered in the Elder Resource Guide in partnership with local Councils on Aging to educate the public on their legal rights as they age.

MassNAELA also recently issued the latest edition of its Special Needs and Disability Law Toolkit: https://massnaela.com/specialneedstoolkit/. The Toolkit assists with managing legal, financial and medical matters; locating housing; finding advocacy agencies and services; and taking advantage of Federal programs. Originally developed for non-attorneys, the Toolkit has become a tremendous resource for all attorneys, their current and potential clients, and the unique needs and disability community.

Another valuable resource offered by MassNAELA is its video providing information about Health Care Proxies in Massachusetts and their importance. Available in Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole, the video can be found at: https://massnaela.com/valuable-resources/.

MassNAELA launched Elder Law Month with its annual Elder Law Institute on May 2. Designed for attorneys, this year’s program, “Mastering Trusts: From Alphabet Soup to Strategic Planning,” reviewed different types of Trusts and how they can be used.

NAELA, the national organization, held its annual conference May 8 and 9, 2025, in Seattle, WA, gathering members from chapters across the country. Roughly 12 members of MassNAELA attended.
