Vacasa Ranks its Most Popular Downhill Destinations for Winter 2021

61% of Americans who plan on taking a ski getaway this year are making up for canceled trips—and here’s where they’re headed

Vacasa, North America’s leading vacation rental management platform, released its Best Places to Ski report today, highlighting the six most in-demand destinations based on searches last month using the ski-in-ski-out amenity filter on Vacasa.com.

Within the report are also findings from Vacasa’s recent survey*, which discovered that 61% of Americans planning a ski or snowboarding trip this winter are rebooking getaways they had to previously postpone due to COVID-19 or other factors. The survey also found that 34% of participants prioritize exploring new ski and snowboarding areas when choosing a mountain for their upcoming trip.

To help narrow down the options, Vacasa sorts the top ski-in-ski-out destinations into splurge and wallet-friendly categories—after all, affordability ranks as another top priority for Americans when deciding which slopes to travel to. Though not every group is budget-conscious: a third of Gen Z and Millennials gearing up for a ski trip this winter say they’re going to bigger and better destinations than they’ve visited before.

From previous winter Olympic venues in British Columbia to more accessible slopes on the East Coast, these are the six most-searched ski destinations:

Splurge-Worthy Getaways:

  • Whistler, British Columbia
  • Big Sky, Montana
  • Park City, Utah

Budget-Friendly Getaways:

  • Breckenridge, Colorado
  • Sugar Mountain, North Carolina
  • Steamboat Springs, Colorado

And for those looking to shred in the upper right corner of the U.S., check out Vacasa’s ski-accessible vacation rentals in the Adirondack Mountains or at the base of Killington, aka "the beast of the east.”
